Ever wondered why you always feel so good wandering in the mountains, in the forest, on the beach or by a waterfall? Many people have experienced it and always come back Re-energized and rejuvenated when they visit those places. They think it is because of the wind and the air that feel fresher there and less polluted. They are not too far from the truth as there is indeed something in the air. Something negative. There is something negative in the air they breathe that makes them feel good and that is negative Ion by millions if not billions. This is a rare case where “Negative” is good and “Positive” is bad. “Ions”! does that ring a bell? Ever heard it before? Most likely in your chemistry class. Negative Ion therapy is, in my opinion, another wonder medicine from mother nature itself that many people don’t even know about, yet that changed the life of millions of people.
Negative Ions: What are they
Negative Ions are invisible, tasteless and odorless. They are created in nature when due to their high energy, crashing or splashing water causes the splitting of neutral air particles which then lose or gain an electron. Waterfall, crashing waves or shower are good examples.
They also occur when due to the sunlight or other effects such as the photosynthesis, the oxygen in the air loses or gains an electron and just like with water, creates negative charges or negative Ion.
Negative Ion can also be artificially produced by Negative Ions Generators found for sale in stores or online. This very specific characteristic is what air purifier manufacturers push forward to get people to buy their equipment rather than one from a competitor.
As you can see, negative Ions are available everywhere although due to many factors their concentration may vary, creating a healthy or a sick living environment. We inhale them and according to scientists, when they enter our bloodstream, they create biochemical reactions leading to positive results with mood-related diseases, depression, stress and energy levels. The beneficial effects of negative Ion on health will be discussed later in this article.
What makes negative Ion so particular
Everyone, including scientists, agree on the benefits of being exposed to a great source of negative Ion such as a waterfall, the top of a mountain or just by crashing waves on the beach. As usual, these benefits have attracted many industrial and investors and as result, the market is full of devices that promise to transform your dark bedroom into a paradise of fresh air filled with negative Ion that will heal all kind of sickness you may have. No need to tell you that this is a false statement.
The following have been listed as positive changes observed among people that have been exposed to negative Ion:
- Lower stress levels
- Great energy levels boost
- Acts as a natural anti-depressant
- Strengthening of the immune system
- Improving sleep
- Improving Appetite and sexual drive
- Help relieve Asthma, Allergies, and Migraines
- Reinforcing collagen production
- Improving blood circulation
- Increasing mental energy
- Help balance pH and hormone levels
- Reducing inflammation
- Fighting vaginal irritations and infections (When used on women sanitary napkins)
- Eliminate unwanted odor (When used on women sanitary napkins)
- And the list goes on…
Their effect on mood is definitely the most widely used therapeutic application for negative Ion. That relaxed feeling when in nature, at the beach or by the waterfall is actually the positive impact of being in an environment filled with negative Ion. These feelings of relaxation could also be scientifically proven when scientists replicated similar results by exposing a person to artificially generated negative Ion. Their explanation is that negative Ion by increasing the oxygen flow into our brain, cells and tissues make us feel better and more mentally alert. On the contrary, positive Ions slow down the delivery of oxygen creating symptoms known as oxygen starvation.
How to get the benefits of negative Ion without leaving your couch
While it is always recommended moving or stepping out as a general health advice whether at home or at work, especially if you want to inhale some negative Ion and feel their relaxing and rejuvenating effect on your overall health, there are situations where for whatever reason you are stuck at home, or at work, or you just cannot go to the beach or to the mountains as much as you would like to. In today’s modern society, this tends to be the norm, especially in the winter months for those living closer to the northern hemisphere.
This beautiful scientific finding linked to the above-mentioned facts have attracted all kind of good and bad investors and manufacturers that have come up with all kind of devices advertising them as THE solution to everyone health issues. As one could expect, these false promises threw some shadow on this wonderful natural healing element but without completely destroying its well-proven health benefits.
Nowadays, all kind of different products is available on the market that promise to get some negative Ion into your body one way or another. While some claims are legitimate, others are just ridiculous, yet there are still people falling for them and it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between good and bad products. I will cover each of those products in independent product review articles still to come.
I will not name them all but below is a list of the most common products linked with negative Ion:
Duh…! Remember what we said at the beginning? The energy from crashing or splashing water? Guess what water drops do when hit the floor! Bingo. They generate negative Ion. So if you need to find new ideas but cannot step out of the house, take a long shower as it might help. Besides that, Amazon has “Negative Ion shower head” for sale in their inventory.
Negative Ion Generator
You find lots of these in stores and online. The early successes and findings of negative Ions benefits have led all sorts of investors and manufacturers to bring these little to mid-size devices on the market, promising that they would heal all kind of diseases people have. Of course, this is a bit exaggerated. While negative Ion benefits have now been scientifically proven, electronic devices made to generate them also have their flaws and do not always deliver to their promises for many reasons. The major one being that although some of these machines can generate millions of negative Ion, these Ion can only travel so far and one would literally carry one as a necklace to enjoy all the benefits. This led to a decrease from the early enthusiasm around this other wonder of mother nature.
The most common manufacturers found on online stores such as Amazon are Ionpacific, Ion Trading, VOTOMO, Natur Air or OION Technologies to name a few. Their prices range from $50 all the way up to $500 and more.
Negative Ion Bracelet & Necklace
Beside negative Ion generators, the jewelry is the next big section that was invaded by investors. There is all kind of bracelets and necklaces available on the market that promise negative Ion through the skin. How accurate can this be? How many Ion can you absorb that way? Are they realistic and/or reliable? Those that believe their bracelet or necklace to be working, is it just a placebo effect? These are all the questions that would need to be answered before you invest I one of these fashion items as their price can go all the way to $800 like the Swarowski negative Ion necklace from Purelife.
Pendants are also available with the same type of promises.
Women Sanitary Napkins
Sanitary napkins bearing a negative Ion loaded strip is how I came to know about negative Ions and the wonderful thing they can do. No, I don’t use sanitary napkins. As I was telling a friend of mine about the great health benefits of alkaline water, she brought up the topic of negative Ions loaded sanitary napkins that she was using at the time and all the good things it did to her. She never stopped using them since then. My friend sanitary napkins were made by a company called Winalite. I tried contacting them but they never got back to me. Amazon is also full of those sanitary napkins, with the most popular being their “Love Moon” napkins.
In the particular case of negative Ion sanitary napkins, I was able to actually meet someone who confirms all the good things I read about negative Ion, which is great. My friend who was suffering from fibroid resulting in heavy discharges during her menstruation period which always led to developing bad smell in the course of the day. When she started using anion sanitary napkins, the difference was just unbelievable as she noticed the following: No more smell, no more overflowing, more energy, less stress, better mood, almost no more visit to the family doctor, which meant a stronger immune system.
The internet and YouTube are full of video testimonies from people who have used these sanitary napkins. Many people even remove the anion loaded strip put it in a bottle of water a drink that water to get the negative Ion benefits. Golfer just lay the same stripes in their shoes; it is just incredible when you see how far people imagination can go to get all the benefits of negative Ion.
Many people claim that burning candles, especially Beeswax candles emit a great amount of negative Ion in the process. Is this just a marketing statement or is there really strong evidence supporting this claim? I have not so far come across any reliable studies results that would support this. I don’t doubt the health benefits of negative Ion as stated above but do candles really emit the necessary amount that would make you feel their benefits? Only those who have tried it can answer this question. I met with many that only swear by them and have one in every room of their house.
Besides the aesthetic addition doubled with the calming sound and visual stimuli of water movement inside the room, the negative Ion benefits claimed from tabletop water fountains are only because they mimic a waterfall in a smaller scale. People using them also claim that the air feels fresher and clean in any room that is featured with an indoor water fountain. While it is quite possible to produce a certain amount negative Ion from an indoor water fountain, it is hard to believe that they would actually produce enough to make a noticeable difference. However, reading testimonies, many confirm great feelings around indoor water fountains. I guess you can still try one for yourself. I used to have one in my bedroom when I was a student. Negative ions were unknown to me at the time and all I can say is that there was a difference in the air, especially in the early winter months right after the heat was turned on, I did not suffer from coughing or irritated throat as I used to. I thought it was just the moisture in the air, especially because the water would eventually evaporate but I guess it was a combination of all that.
This is another product that seems to sell a lot and for many applications. I once visited a good friend of mine on a Sunday morning. When I got to his place, as he was greeting me I noticed his teeth were all dark and when I asked he mentioned using bamboo charcoal powder to whiten his teeth. A few weeks later, I must admit that his teeth were very white for a smoker.
Bamboo charcoal is made by burning Asian bamboo at a temperature between 800 and 1000 degree Celsius. The resulting charcoal is the bamboo charcoal.
The charcoal is then ground into a powder and included in the manufacturing process of a variety of products such as fabric, toothpaste, and even edibles. Promoters of such products claim the following benefits:
- Electromagnetic waves absorbent
- skin care
- Water purifier
- Release minerals in the water
- Promoting blood circulation and better metabolism
- Releases far infra-red rays
- Anti-bacteria, anti-dust, and anti insects
- Dehumidifies and deodorizes
While some of these benefits might be true for raw bamboo charcoal, no strong evidence or researches have been conducted to confirm that all the derived products do also carry the same benefits. One that I can talk about is the bamboo charcoal powder for tooth whitening as I have seen it in action. So if you feel like trying some of those products, Amazon and many other stores, are full of them.
A salt lamp and more particularly a Himalayan Salt Lamp is made from hand chiseling a block of ancient crystal salt and then making a hole in the middle that would hold a light bulb. When turned on, the light bulb generates heat and light which then allows the salt block through its hygroscopic feature and the minerals trapped in it for years or century to attract water molecules and any pollutant or odor attached to it from the surrounding air. In the process, it releases some negative ions and provides all the health benefits that its user claim it does.
A Himalayan Salt lamp is for sure a great addition to the general look of a room and that feature alone can be a great selling feature. Can it really deliver similar results to the one you would get from standing by a waterfall? This is a bit hard to believe as no proper study has been done on the subject. Also, the fact that negative Ions do not travel far makes it also questionable. However, there are being sold and many people believe in their health benefits such as:
- Increasing oxygen flow to the brain thus, giving you more energy, and making you more alert and responsive to your surroundings.
- The emitted negative Ions counter the effect of “radioactive waves” or “electric smog” emitted by our electrical devices.
- Offering protection from airborne toxins that could be floating around us.
- Lowering high blood pressure and reducing the chance of heart attacks and strokes.
- The Himalayan salt used in these lamps contains around 84 trace minerals that your body needs, allowing the lamp to also strengthen your bones, regulate your body pH, and balance the water content in your body and help fight cancer and degenerative diseases.
In my opinion, Himalayan Salt Lamp do deliver some negative Ion and help clean the air in the room they are placed in but I do not believe that the amount of ion generated can be comparable to that at the beach or a waterfall.
And the list goes on…
The list is long and I can’t cover every single item that claims to be generating negative Ion for a balanced body pH in one post. I will be reviewing the most popular ones in later posts to assist you in buying them if you choose to do so.
Dangers and side effects of negative Ion
It wouldn’t be serious to end this post without going over any potential dangers and side effects that can arise from being exposed to negative Ion.
- In my opinion, the very first danger is to believe in all the false claims made around products sold online. It is scientifically proven that exposure to negative Ion has great health benefits. But not every claim online is true and could get anyone who blindly believes in it to ignore other alternatives to solve their health issues. So I strongly recommend being cautious when buying anything that claims to be generating negative Ion.
- Another potential negative effect could be from over bleeding after surgery or after a cut. A health benefit from being exposed to negative Ion is an improved blood circulation even in capillary vessels and as a reverse effect, one could bleed to death.
- Some people have claimed that some negative Ion bracelets were creating ionizing radiation. Whether this is true or not, I would like to mention that there are many everyday items that produce more radiation than the microsievert potentially produced by the bracelets. However, a non-stop exposure to radiation over an extended period can have detrimental effects on one’s health.
Finally, I get to end this article. This was lots of information. I am sorry it turned out to be so long but I tried to only bring up relevant information.
Negative Ions are definitely another wonder of mother nature that everyone should enjoy add they come with great health benefits. Negative Ions help us keep a balanced body pH. Most of us have experienced it while on trips in nature, at the beach or by waterfalls. Scientists were able to reproduce these phenomena, which led investors to make all kind of products claiming they can generate negative Ions. While some claims are proven, many are questionable and people should use their best judgment when deciding to invest in one of them.
I hope I was able to give you an idea of something that could help you keep a balanced body pH.
